Stila Japan bites the dust

Stila will be pulling out of Japan by end August. Since the company ran into financing problems earlier this year, the prospects for the company has been quite tenuous. It did eventually get bought over by another company but nevertheless, Stila's global footprint has been steadily decreasing. It has already pulled out of Malaysia. There was also a massive warehouse sale in Taiwan in May. Over here in Singapore, the sole counter at the Escentials boutique in Tangs Orchard is still there but I wouldn't count on it remaining for much longer. Stila products have also been making a frequent appearance at warehouse sales by Luxasia as well at the recent Robinsons Expo sale.

Check out this Iswii post and these Taiwanese blogs here and here for pics from the Taiwan warehouse sale and the hauls. Stila Taiwan always had the best and widest variety of GWPs of any country. I love that watch!

I still remember reading an article a few years ago in US Harper's Bazaar about Jeanine Lobell being a star in Japan. People waited in line for hours to meet her in departement stores. "Stila Girls" collected everything in the line-up and special editions were gone in a day.

But Lobell left her company and Lauder sold Stila. Was the brand already running out of steam? I must say I lost interest several years ago.

  3. IMHO, Stila eyeshadow isn't as interesting as Japanese eyeshadow. I only like the illustrations on most of their product pakaging. cgee

  4. I remember the same story CedriCe, so I'm really surprised to hear this news! Can this steady decline be attributed to the change in ownership? I see Stila stuff all the time now in Nordstrom's Rack (an outlet store in the US for Nordstroms), and heavily discounted on beautycrunch. It's almost cheapened the brand really.

  7. Too bad! I heard about the news from Taiwan friends 2 months ago too. I kind of like their eyeshadows & lip glazes. I guess Stila will have some more sales soon in Singapore to clear stock. Let's all keep our eyes & ears open.

  8. it's a pity stila has to close shop and decrease their image in market. i know this brand is well liked by many Taiwanese socialite and celebrity especially their cream blusher, it's always featured in their makeup bag, Taiwanese beauty magazine

  9. I love Stila's packaging, but has stopped buying their products as the texture of say, eye shadows are not as good as Shu Uemura or even Bobbi brown. Colors are not as interesting as some Japanese brands as well.
