YSL 30 Years of Beauty Asia-exclusive collection

YSL will be releasing an Asia-exclusive collection on 7 March in Japan to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the debut of its makeup range. All the shades are new and limited edition.

1. Rouge Pure Shine #95 Petal Of Rose (3885yen)

2. Radiant Pressed Powder #18 Shimmering Pink (6090yen, 10g)

3. Ombre Quadre Lumiere #17 (7425yen)

Fine-Fit UV Long Keep

Yet another new base makeup collection, this time from Fine-Fit, which is a Sofina brand. (Sofina also owns Raycious and Aube. Fine-Fit is targeted at ladies in their late 20s to 30s whereas Raycious is for younger women.)

Fine-Fit's new concept for its base makeup is that instead of the usual makeup primer that comes only in 1 shade, it is advocating the use of its new Base Foundation UV Long Keep Liquid (6 shades, 3150yen) as the primer before the new Powder Foundation UV Long Keep (6 shades, 2835yen for refill and 1050yen for case). Both are formulated to be highly resistant against sweat and sebum and to provide good, long-lasting coverage of pores, redness and skin discolorations.

The website also has detailed step-by-step tutorials on how to apply the two products. The tutorials are easy to follow even if you can't read Japanese.

Coffret D'Or Nail Polish Collection

Coffret D'Or will be launching its nail polish range on 16 April in Japan. Here's the preview photo. My guess is that these should retail for 1050yen, the same price as T'estimo nail polishes except that no drugstore discounts are available for Coffret D'Or, unlike T'estimo.

1. Jewel Light Nail Color: 20 shades

2. Clear Shiny Top Coat

3. Smooth Up Base Coat

4. Cuticle Care Oil

Suqqu New Base Makeup

Suqqu has put up a website to showcase its forthcoming new base makeup collection. Due out on 14 March in Japan, the collection includes:

1. Liquid Foundation Aqua: Liquid foundation with a natural finish and light texture. SPF26 PA++ in 6 shades (7350yen for 24ml)

2. Powder Foundation Fresh: Powder foundation that gives a natural, glowy finish and is resistant against sweat and sebum. SPF27 and PA++ in 6 shades. (7350yen for refill 11g, 2100yen for case)

3. Face Protector N: Primer with SPF30 and PA+++ (4725yen for 30g)

Body Shop Apple Blossom

The Body Shop was offering a great deal on this limited edition Apple Blossom set, comprising the Body Lotion 200ml, Shower Gel 200ml and Eau de Toilette 30ml, for the great price of only S$32.90, a savings of 45% from the usual retail price of $61.70 if one were to buy the three products separately. I liked the clean fresh apple scent which is light enough without being too cloying or sweet. As the label reads, "deliciously blended with lemon, orange, pineapple and a fusion of jasmine, freesia and cedarwood, it produces a clean fragrance that has a subtle happiness. Go on; give in to your happiness." Now, who can resist a tagline like that?!

Majolica Majorca Majolook Trick On Review

I've been test-driving the new Majolica Majorca Majolook (Trick On) GR741 and revamped Lash Enamel Glamour Neo BK999 over the past week and I'm happy to report big huge raves for both!

First, on the Majolook GR741. It's a nifty little quad that contains 4 very wearable shades of pale bluish white, teal, dark emerald green and a pale gold Trick On Powder. I'm glad that MM has done away with the cream base/liner shades that were in previous versions of the Majolooks as those were never any good, especially the cream liners which creased and faded very quickly. MM rarely releases a green/teal-themed quad so this immediately caught my eye. Plus, it had the added allure of being limited edition. Although it's a royal shame that MM picked the prettiest quad to be limited edition, I can understand why the other two Trick On quads which are pink and brown-themed will probably sell better than the GR741. Overall, the Trick On quads are a vast improvement and return to form for MM after the lacklustre collections that MM released in 2007, some of which were too difficult to pull off for anyone over 25 years old.

I liked the silky and soft texture of the shades in the GR741 quad, which apply a bit sheer at first but can be easily layered for the desired intensity. The teal shade is not too loud or garish that it makes one look like a clown. It's actually easier to wear than MAC's famous Parrot which has more bright blue tones. The dark emerald shade in the quad is super gorgeous and a nice change from the usual black and brown liners. I didn't find anything particularly unique or special about the Trick On shade but it's still useful for adding a bit of extra sparkle at the corners or in the middle of the lid. I also liked the butterfly motif on the lid and the fact that you basically have everything you need in an ultra-light and portable compact for creating a complete eye look.

At only 1575yen (4g), this palette is great value for money and I highly recommend getting it before it sells out. GR741 is currently available on Adambeauty.com for US$19.50 inclusive of postage. That's cheaper than Ichibankao.com which is selling it for US$22.

Moving on to the Lash Enamel Glamour Neo, this is MM's volumising waterproof mascara. (Lash Expander Neo is the fibre-based lengthening mascara.) The Lash Enamel Glamour Neo comes printed with the tagline "Hope my lashes are full and smooth" on the tube. It has an unusual fine-toothed curved comb applicator that took some getting used to but it turned out to be excellent for reaching those shorter lashes at the inner corners. I also liked the fact that it was easy to build up length with the comb applicator. It also did a decent job of adding volume without the lashes looking too exaggerated or fake.

Thanks to its secret "Gloss Oil" ingredient that helps to ensure that lashes continue to look glossy even after the mascara dries, the mascara is a true glossy jet black without any greyish tones that applies very smoothly unlike Western brand mascaras which often have a dry almost-clumpy texture. Although I did have some problems with a bit of clumping but it was pretty easy to correct as all it took was a quick press of my lashes with my thumb and index finger to remove the excess mascara. Another impressive aspect of Lash Enamel Glamour Neo was that my lashes stayed curled for several hours after application of the mascara without any flaking or smearing. This is actually the first MM mascara I've ever tried so I can't say how it compares to previous MM mascaras.

Overall, I still preferred my current HG mascara, Awake All Direction Mascara which is even better in term of building long pretty lashes, but the Lash Enamel Glamour Neo comes a close second. Also, Lash Enamel Glamour is only 1260yen compared to the Awake mascara which costs a whopping 3150yen.

Armani Caffe Collection

Armani's Caffe Collection was launched in Japan on 13 February. Armani's promo visuals always feature impossibly glamorous and classically elegant made up models that make me want to snap up the entire collection in the vain hope of replicating some of that magic. I simply love the look on the model, with a clean bare face and a very modern sexy deep red lip. The model is wearing Armani Silk Lipstick #62 Frost Espresso. But the prohibitive prices (3150yen for a nail polish?! Get real...) mean that great restraint is a must in order to avoid financial ruin.

Here are the details on the collection. All items are limited edition except for the 5 Lip Shimmers.

1. Armani Silk Lipstick (3990yen): #16 Vanilla Fudge, #59 Frosted Mocha, #61 Fozen Cocoa and #62 Frost Espresso

2. Armani Shine Lipstick (3990yen): #43 Dolce Rose

3. Armani Sheer Lipstick (3990yen): #28 Almond Latte and #29 Cafe Americano

4. Armani Lip Shimmer (3675yen): #44 Light Beige, #45 Satin Beige, #46 Almond, #47 Hazel and #48 Dark Brown

5. Fluid Shine Nail Polish (3150yen): #36 Praline and #37 Dark Brown

Here's a preview of Armani's forthcoming Face Fabric collection, due out on 20 March, which will feature a new series of nude foundations.

According to WWD.com, Armani recently opened its first freestanding travel retail beauty Boutique in Hong Kong International Airport Terminal 1. Armani also has 4 other beauty outlets in Hong Kong, comprising 3 freestanding boutiques and one counter in Seibu department store. Armani's first beauty store in Taiwan also opened 4 months ago.

Anna Sui Website Update

The Anna Sui website has been updated with the new base makeup items that will be released on 1 March: Loose Compact Powder UV, Control Color Primer UV #100 and Oil Control Paper. The Loose Compact Powder UV (4725yen for 4g) is available in 6 shades ranging from pearly lucent to more matte flesh tones.

Kose Precious Beauty

Not to be outdone by Shiseido, Kose also publishes a seasonal magalog, Precious Beauty. The Spring '08 issue can also be viewed online. The main feature is on Esprique Precious' new base makeup collection and it also features tutorials for applying powder foundation and tips for prepping your skin for makeup with toning lotion and makeup base. According to the interview with one of the scientists responsible for developing Esprique Precious Dramatical Stay UV Pact Foundation, the secret of the foundation's Zero Shine Powders ability to prevent oxidisation (i.e. foundation turning darker after a few hours of wear) iss because when the powder absorbs sebum, it turns clear instead of greyish or chalky unlike other foundations. Sounds very promising!
