Canmake Agebuto Mascara

Canmake has just launched its new Agebuto Mascara(S$22.90) at Watsons in Singapore. Available in just one shade (Deep Black), Agebuto (pronounced as 'Ah-gay-bu-toe' in Japanese) is a waterproof, fibre-free mascara that promises to keep one's lashes curled while adding hyper volume.

The spiral brush has relatively large spaces in between the spirals to ensure that the lashes are well-coated with the mascara fluid for greater volumising effect.

Compared with Canmake's Gokunobi Mascara, which is a fibre-based lengthening mascara, actually the Agebuto Mascara brush comes out of the tube more more cleanly without as much mascara on the brush. (In the pic below, Agebuto is above Gokunobi.) The Gokunobi brush gets very gunked up with product, especially near the cap.

I find the Agebuto Mascara brush to be just the right size and easy to use, unlike some Western brand mascaras which have excessively large brushes like Cover Girl's Lash Blast.

My bare lashes after using the MAC eyelash curler.

After applying Agebuto.

True to its claim, Agebuto Mascara keeps my lashes curled and lifted throughout the day without flaking or smudging. The formula slicks on easily, without being too dry or waxy, like most Western brand mascaras tend to be. It takes a few brushes through my lashes to build up the length and volume. The mascara is largely clump-free until about the fourth or fifth layer.

After using Agebuto regularly over the past three weeks, I do like it. It is easy to use and lives up to its claims of holding the curl of my lashes and adding volume to my skinny, sparse Asian lashes. It removes relatively easily with Lancome Bifacil, unlike some other Japanese brand waterproof mascaras which only come off with cleansing oils. I also prefer fibre-free mascaras in general as fibres tend to irritate my eyes.

The price in Singapore is unfortunately twice that in Japan, where it retails for 714yen (about S$11) but it still compares well to other drugstore brand mascaras that one finds in Watsons. If you wait a few months, it will become eligible for Watsons' regular 20% discounts.

(The mascara was provided by Canmake for review purposes.)

hi,
I prefer Agebuto over Gokunobi because Agebuto does not contain fibres and the brush wand is much less messy than Gokunobi.

Hi Iris! Just wanna tell you that I find your mascara reviews really helpful (actually all your reviews are helpful!) as I have the same concerns. My lashes are straight and sparse and Western formulas weigh them down after curling.

I will definitely try the Agebuto mascara! My HG, the MM lash enamel neo, was discontinued last year and I am down to my LAST TUBE from my Japan haul in 2009! Eeks!

Hi Haru,
I m finding the mascara which can curl up my lashes for all day long. Which one do u recommend? Lancome doll up mascara or Canmake Agebuto mascara? Thanks in advance.

With love
Rosa

hi Rosa,
Do you mean the Lancome Hypnose Doll Eyes mascara? I haven't tried that so I can't say how it compares to Agebuto mascara. But the Agebuto mascara is definitely much cheaper and it holds the curl of my lashes better than other Lancome mascaras I've tried.

Thank you for this review! While I don't like using waterproof mascaras, especially the super-difficult-to-remove Japanese brands, this one does pique my interest. I like Canmake's Gokubuto mascara although the fibers can be a bit pesky at times. One reason why I like Canmake's Gokubuto and Gokunobi is because they are "drier" mascaras in that they seem to dry very quickly after application. That helps greatly in keeping my eyelashes that I curled with a curler from uncurling.

Hi kat,
The Agebuto mascara also dries relatively fast. I'm also wary of using waterproof mascaras too often but the only mascaras that hold the curl of my lashes are all of the waterproof variety.

Hello~!
Thanks for the review!^-^ I liked Gokubuto, so I'm planning on buying this mascara, but I was wondering if, like Gokubuto and Gokunobi, wash off easily with warm water too?
Thank you~!

Hi,
Agebuto is a waterproof mascara and not removable with warm water. According to the Canmake website, only Gokunobi and Gokubuto mascaras are removable with warm water.
