Review: Etude House BB Magic Fresh Cool Mousse

I tried out the Etude House BB Magic Fresh Cool Mousse SPF30 PA++ (S$31.90) for the first time today and was quite happy with it. The texture is very similar to Shu Uemura UV Underbase Mousse but the Etude House Mousse has a firmer consistency. A ping pong ball-sized amount was all I needed for one application.

Rather than glob it all on at once, I applied a pea-sized amount to small sections of my face and blended each one in before moving on to the next section. The mousse dries fairly quickly but you can also layer it on for more coverage. The color match was perfect (I usually wear Ochre 10 in Japanese brand foundations, or MAC NC20) while the finish was seamless without accentuating any dryness, flakiness or smudges.

What I liked was how easy and fast it is to apply, unlike liquid foundations which can be tricky. My biggest peeve about liquid foundation is that any mistakes in application are much more obvious compared to powder foundations, although liquid foundations usually give a more natural finish. When I was still using liquid foundations, I often discovered in the middle of the day that there were small smudges where I had not blended properly. But with the BB Magic Fresh Cool Mousse, the texture is so light and easy to blend that it's virtually idiot-proof.

The coverage is sheer to medium. It can even out your skin tone and cover up some skin redness but if you have serious dark circles, you will still need a separate concealer. I found the oil control power to be average and my nose started to shine after about 1.5 hours, which is normal for me as my T-zone is super oily, but this is easily remedied with an oil blotting sheet. For ladies with oily skin, I think this is a good alternative to liquid foundations which usually have a heavier texture. And at only S$31.90, it's easy on the pocket as well (and you can probably score it for much cheaper if you order it online from Korea).

Hi Iris,

How about trying Coffret D'or new beauty lasting power veil UV (pink bottle) and also Coffret D'or magicalflat concealer? They hold my Lancome Maquicake foundation really well, considering that I have my combination skin.

Here is my routine:
1) Lasting power veil UV all over the face as it's a makeup base
2) Magicalflat concealer on my nose and sides of my nose
3) Ettusais T-zone oil block for my t-zone
4) Maquicake UV compact foundation

I used to just go with a Ettusais makeup base plus its t-zone oil block. My nose will shine at 10am without fail. =( But now, my nose stays oil-free till after lunch. No kidding =) Btw, I apply makeup every morning at about 6:30am.

I am so happy with both Coffret D'or products that I immediately got my bro to get backup for me from HK. Yes, I have learnt from you that Japanese products are seasonal. So better buy more now than regret later. ;)

Do give both products a try ^_^

Hey AhCapp,

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll check them out after I've up some of my current stash :-) Only thing is I haven't had good experiences with Ettusais in the past. Their anti-acne skincare made my skin even more sticky and oily.

6.30am? Wow, I can barely wake up at 7am every day as it is!

Do you still apply sunblock before the BB mousse and apply blush and concealer after? Thank you for the review!

Hi,

I don't use another sunblock as the BB Mousse already has SPF30, plus I'm indoors in the office the whole day anyway. I apply the mouse first, then concealer under the eyes and blush, then finish it off with a light dusting of loose powder.

Hi,
I haven't tried the BB Magic Cream before so I'm afraid I can't say how it compares with the Mousse.

Hi, I wonder if you would know how the mousse's coverage compares to Skinfood's Aloe BB cream?
