The sponge layer under the lid can be used to tap off the excess blush powder from the brush. I guess it also helps to prevent the loose blush powder from getting all over the compact when the lid is closed.

woh, this is so beautiful, that is the reason why i love jill stuart but the pigments can sometime be disappointing beside the great packaging.
The display looks huge, makes it look like they are hundreds of different colors to choose :)
