Favourite Products of 2010

A reader asked for my favourite products in 2010, as well as my least favourites so here goes!

1. Jill Stuart Blush Blossom #4 Seductive Rose: Of the four Blush Blossoms that I own, this is my favourite as it always gives me a lovely rosy hint of colour that never looks over the top. I've reviewed it here.

2. Shu Uemura Miracle Cherry Blush Tint: Love the cute illustration by Aya Takano. This is virtually idiot-proof to apply and has an excellent non-greasy texture. You can see swatches here.

3. By Terry Rose de Rose Sheer Liquid Blush No. 1 Fresh Rose: Near impossible to find, this liquid blush has a lovely rose scent and always looks natural, no matter how many layers are applied. I've review it here.

4. Sleek The Original i-Divine Palette: After trying out the Sleek palettes earlier this month, I finally understood what all the raves in the beauty blogs were about. The Original is a very versatile palette that lets you create a multitude of looks. The shades are well-pigmented with great blendability. I've done two looks with it here and here.

5. Cosme Decorte AQ Face Powder N 001: This pale pink powder is incredibly light and gossamer fine and provides a dreamy finish.

6. Anna Sui Loose Compact Powder UV #200: The pale lavender loose powder has tiny micro-sparkles that help to give an added glow, without being too obvious or over-the-top.

7. Maquillage Stick Foundation UV: Simply a breeze to apply and blend, this stick foundation provides good coverage and helps to reduce the appearance of my pores, especially in my T-zone area. My shade is Pink Ochre 10.

8. Addiction Tinted Moisturiser: This actually feels more like a lightweight foundation than a tinted moisturiser. This is incredible easy and fast to apply as it never streaks or cakes. It looks very natural and helps to even out my skintone. My shade is Tint No. 1, which you can see here.

9. Shiseido Refining Makeup Primer: This truly makes my skin look more refined as my pores appear smaller and the skintone is subtly brightened. It also enables the smoother application of foundation on top.

10. Lancome Color Fever Gloss #264 Urban Beige: Love the glossy finish with the hint of warm brown.

11. Cosme Decorte AQ Rouge Supreme BE355: My go-to lipstick for elegant classic beige lips, which you can see in this earlier review. This has just the right amount of brown such that it does not wash me out.

12. Dior Addict Ultra Gloss Reflect #677 Silk Fuschia: This gives a cheerful pop of translucent shiny pink and has zero grittiness. You can see it in this FOTD post.

13. Shiseido Nourishing Mascara Base: This is excellent for helping to keep lashes curled throughout the day without making them feel dry and brittle. I've written a more detailed review here.

14. K-Palette Real Lasting Eyebrow 24h: Super easy to use and always gives me elegant defined brows that last the whole day. 01 Natural Brown is the perfect shade for me. I've just used up my first one!

15. Visee Wide Impact (Curl Long) mascara BK002 Blue Black: This is the best mascara that I've found in terms of keeping my lashes curled all day long even without the use of any mascara base. It provides good lengthening effect and the fibres don't drop in my eyes. The only drawback is that it is super tenacious and hard to remove unless one uses a cleansing oil. The mascara is not limited edition although the shade BK002 with the pink packaging was limited edition for Spring 2010.

16. Paul & Joe Protective Foundation Primer UV: Like the Shiseido primer, this helps to make my skin appear more refined and even. It has a light creamy texture that absorbs readily without feeling greasy. It also has SPF40 PA++, whereas the Shiseido primer has only SPF20 PA+.

17. RMK Face Protector SPF31: I love the elegant light texture of this sunblock which has a slight cooling sensation when applied.

18. Kenzoki Relaxing Eye Whipped Cream: This year, I've found that the skin around my eyes get really dry so I've tried to be more conscientious in applying eye cream. The Kenzoki cream absorbs very well and hydrates effectively without feeling oily.

19. MAC She Who Dares Mineralize Eye Shadow: Simply dazzling and incredibly rich and pigmented. I've reviewed it here.

20. Anna Sui Protective Lip Treatment: A limited edition lip balm from the Beach Collection earlier this year. I love the rose scent and how it immediately softens and hydrates my lips. I've reviewed it here.

21. The Body Shop The Sparkler: Had a minor accident with this when I forgot to take off the cap when squeezing the pump only to be showered in a jet stream of pink fairy dust when I removed the cap. I was pleasantly surprised when I applied the excess on my arms and chest area and found the sparkly effect to be subtle as the powder is incredibly fine. Read the full review here.

22. Beauté de Kosé Eye Fantasist: These make excellent eyeshadow bases and provide a very fine shimmer. It's a pity that the brand is being discontinued.

My favourite fragrances in 2010 are Acca Kappa Calycanthus, Jo Malone Orange Blossom Cologne and L'Occitane Wild Cherry Tree Solid Perfume. For keeping my perpetually dry hands moisturised, I relied on L'Occitane Cherry Blossom Hand Cream.

I was happy with most of the products that I purchased this year but inevitably, there were some duds as well. The following products were a sad fail for me:

1. Chantecaille Les Passementeries: This was just incredibly sheer and took great effort to get it to show up. You can see the look that I did with it here. For the hefty price, this should not be the case.

2. Fasio Mascaliner: This is supposed to work as a liquid eyeliner and mascara in one, thanks to the pointy tapered tip at the end of the mascara wand. However, it was just impossible to use as an eyeliner. As a mascara, it was barely average.

3. Dior Serum de Rouge #560: I purchased this only because it was bundled with the super limited edition Tailleur Bar. Not only did my Serum de Rouge have a failed retraction mechanism, the lip colour also applied patchy and the scent was very similar to a much cheaper Japanese drugstore brand, Kiss.

4. Benefit Ooh La Lift: This is supposed to be a "dream cream for the under-eye area" that provides an instant eye lift. When applied on my skin, it is hardly detectable and simply makes little difference.

5. Esprique Precious Pencil Eyeliner BK001 (from the Twinkle Story holiday coffret): This was hard and tugged at my eyelid. I found it near impossible to get any colour out of it. Finally, it just broke.

6. Urban Decay Surreal Skin Cream to Powder Foundation: I was seduced by the gorgeous purple compact but I just could not get this to apply evenly. It always ended up looking splotchy.

7. Bobbi Brown Denim Sparkle Eye Shadow: The colour payoff was extremely poor and it took many layers to get the sparkle to show up. There was no tester available when I purchased this, otherwise I would definitely have avoided it.

Kosé Sale Haul

I was not able to make it to the Kosé Sale at Great World City yesterday but thanks to Kas (Shine Shimmer & Sparkle), I was still able to snag these four Beauté de Kosé Eye Fantasists!

As some of you may have heard, Beauté de Kosé will be discontinued in the third quarter of 2011, which is a pity as it has quite a loyal following and some outstanding products like the Eye Fantasists, which are metallic cream eyeshadows. I already owned two of these from the Fantasist Collection 2.

The Eye Fantasists were going for S$12 each at the sale, down from the usual retail price of S$38. Above are GR750 Dressed Leaf (left) and GR754 Emerald Mist (right). Below are BL952 Blue Wonder and GR751 Dew Green.

Hope some of you ladies managed to make it to the sale!

Beaute de Kose to be discontinued

Just read on 2Channel that Beaute de Kose will be discontinued in September 2011. It is not yet confirmed if it will be replaced by another brand. In Japan, the counters have been merged with the Cosme Decorte counters, which also belong to Kose. No wonder the official website has been neglected since early this year, without even any update on the Summer Fantasist coffret which will be released on 1 June. It's always sad to see a good brand go.

Beaute de Kose Summer Fantasist Collection

Beaute de Kose will release a Fantasist Collection (5250yen) on 1 June in Japan. The kit contains two Eye Fantasists in GR755 and BR357, Rouge Fantasist Aqua Vinyl OR281, Face Colour F and a solid perfume, all lovingly packaged in a floral print box. The theme of the collection is "Flower & Light".

EOTD: Beaute de Kose Eye Fantasist

Here's the look that I did today with the Beaute de Kose Eye Fantasists in Dark Cherry (SP063) and Shimmery Pink (PK857) from the Fantasist Collection 2 set that I picked up in Tokyo last week.

The Shimmery Pink shade has a lovely multi-coloured shimmer while the Dark Cherry shade has a more metallic finish. Both apply sheer but can be layered to achieve greater intensity. You can also layer powder eyeshadows over the Eye Fantasist but I did not do so for this look as I wanted to see how the Eye Fantasists performed on their own. The lasting power was good with minimal fading and creasing after eight hours of wear.

I also used Visee Lash Wide Impact (Curl Long) BK002 mascara.

Tokyo Last Day Haul

Yesterday was our last day in Tokyo and the mad beauty addict in me decided that I just had to get more Steam Creams. As the counter in Shibuya where I originally bought the Soleil can design had closed, we decided to head to Ikebukuro where a new Steam Cream shop was supposed to open yesterday (Friday). When we got there at 10am, the shop staff were standing around with the shelves all empty. As it turns out, they were not able to start operations until much later in the day as their stocks had not even arrived yet. With just a couple of hours left before we had to catch the coach to the airport, my indulgent husband agreed to head to Ueno with me, on the other side of Tokyo where there was another Steam Cream counter in OIOI department store.

At OIOI, I got another 6 Steam Creams: (top row, left to right) Epris and Yume, (middle row) Gaudy, Bonheur and Fiore, (bottom row) Soleil and Party. I have been using Steam Cream as a body moisturiser and am already one-third of the way through my first can in just one week. I love how it instantly absorbs, leaving my skin soft and moisturised without any greasiness. Steam Cream is available in Singapore online through Soap'n'Sorbet and at the Trixilini boutique in Millenia Walk but the can designs are different from what is available in Tokyo currently.

The trip to Ikebukuro wasn't a total bust though as at the Beaute de Kose counter, I came across the Fantasist Collection 2 (5250yen) which was released for the holiday season last November! This gorgeous set never made it to Singapore, where Kose has been promoting the Esprique Precious brand instead of Beaute de Kose. I was amazed that there were still a couple of sets left at the Seibu counter.

The set contains Eye Fantasist in Dark Cherry (SP063) and Shimmery Pink (PK857), Rouge Fantasist Aqua Vinyl RO681, Puff Cheek PK830 and a glossy body cream. The two Eye Fantasist shades are available only as part of this set. The box is a beauty.

What sold me on the set was of course the Dark Cherry Eye Fantasist which is a gorgeous metallic wine burgundy shade.

My buddy, Kathi over at Lotus Palace has a great review on this set. Do check it out here!

Beaute de Kose Spring 2010

Beaute de Kose's beige-themed "Spring Wind" collection is up on its website. I'm not sure if this collection will make it to Singapore as the Christmas collection never made it here. Instead, it looks like Kose is focusing on the Esprique Precious brand for the Singapore market.

The collection is super tiny and comprises just three new Eye Fantasists which were previously released as limited edition shades.

Beaute de Kose & Visee Spring 2010

Kose is going with a beige theme for both its spring collections for Visee and Beaute de Kose. Visee will release a new line of Glam Nude Eyes (1890yen) on 16 January in Japan:
N1: orange-toned beige
N2: pink beige
N3: brown and gold beige
N4: cool khaki beige
N5: smoky beige

Beaute de Kose will add three beige shades to its popular Eye Fantasist (2625yen) range on 2 January: BE352, BE355 and BE871. These are shades that were previously released as limited edition shades or as part of Christmas coffrets.

Beaute de Kose Fantasist Collection 2

Here's a pic from 2Channel of Beaute de Kose's holiday coffret, Fantasist Collection 2 (5250yen) due out on 20 November in Japan.

The set includes:
1. Eye Fantasist in Dark Cherry (SP063) and Shimmery Pink (PK857)
2. Rouge Fantasist Aqua Vinyl (mini size in clear rose RO681)
3. Puff Cheek (pink blush PK830)
4. Glossy body cream

The Dark Cherry Eye Fantasist sounds promising! Hope this makes it to Singapore, unlike the summer Eye Fantasist coffret which did not make it here.

Beaute de Kose Spring 2009

The Beaute de Kose spring '09 collection is now available at the Kose counters in Singapore! The collection includes two limited edition Eye Fantasist in PK856 Pink Petunia and PU151 Fresh Lilac (S$38 each), two limited edition Rouge Fantasist Aqua Vinyl in PK891 Raspberry Pink and PK892 Baby Blossom (S$35 each) and a new Mascara Fantasist Long Show (S$46). Due to the high yen, the prices in Singapore currently work out to be cheaper than Japan where the Eye Fantasist is 2625yen (S$43).

I tested out the two Eye Fantasist shades and found both to be pretty, sweet shades that are perfect for spring. Pink Petunia is a rosy warm metallic pink with red, gold and silver pearl particles while Fresh Lilac is a light "blue-purple with silver shimmer and a hint of red". To be honest, I could not detect the hint of red in Fresh Lilac but the silver shimmer is lovely. Pink Petunia is not your usual run-of-the-mill baby pink but has a warmth to it which makes it more interesting. I didn't test out the rest of the items.

Currently, if you purchase the new Shirosumi Whitening Serum (S$82), you will receive either a Eye Fantasist or Rouge Fantasist free! The Metro Paragon counter had two Eye Fantasist shades to choose from, namely OR251 and GR751. GR751 is the nicer of the two shades, a metallic pale olive with gorgeous intense shimmer. Shirosumi contains active ingredients such as arbutin (active whitening ingredient), prune enzyme resolvent (to suppress epidermal cells from absorbing melanin) and dipotassium glycyrrhizinate (anti-inflammatory agent).

From 10-31 January, there is also a GWP of a reversible retro nylon tote (in pink or green) and UV umbrella with $120 purchase at all Kose counters. If you spend $200 and above on facial and hair services at Kose Beauty Centres, you can also receive a free Metallic Lustre Eye Shadow palette from the Fall '08 collection worth $72.
